08Editor's notes
What the numbers don't tell you
January is mild and often sunny between Atlantic rain fronts, with afternoons around 15 °C and the city at its quietest. The sales run all month. Tram 28, Belém and the Alfama viewpoints are uncrowded, and hotel rates are at their lowest. Pack a rain jacket and expect a few wet days, about nine, usually in spells of two or three days. New Year's Day is a holiday; Epiphany on 6 January is not, but the bolo-rei cakes fill the bakeries.
The Jerónimos monastery and the Tile Museum are empty on weekday mornings. Sintra is cool, misty and atmospheric, with the Pena Palace in cloud some days. Daylight runs from about half past seven to half past five. For the cool, bright, good-value month with Carnival and almond blossom, see February.
