April is the hottest month, often 36 °C or more, and Songkran from 13 to 15 April closes offices and floods Silom and Khao San Road with water fights and powder. It is joyful and chaotic; many locals leave the city for their home provinces, so traffic is unusually light and some restaurants close for the week. Keep electronics in waterproof bags and expect to be soaked anywhere near the main streets.
Rain falls on about five days, as the first pre-monsoon storms arrive in the second half. Chakri Day on 6 April is a public holiday. Hotel rates rise for Songkran and fall afterwards.
