What the numbers don't tell you
April opens with sakura at full bloom in the first week, hanami picnics under the trees and the year's most crowded parks, then settles into mild, bright weather with afternoons around 19 °C. Golden Week begins on 29 April, when trains, hotels and attractions fill with domestic travellers until 5 May. Book months ahead for the first and last weeks. Rain falls on about ten days, and the late-April azaleas at Nezu Shrine take over from the blossom.
The Kanamara Matsuri in Kawasaki on the first Sunday and the Kamakura Festival in mid-April are easy day trips. Most museums close on Mondays; during Golden Week they open daily and are packed. For the same weather without the two peaks, the second and third weeks of April are the window, with prices already lower than blossom week. The best month of all follows after Golden Week; see May.
