When to go, in short
Buenos Aires sits in the southern hemisphere, so its summer is December to February: hot, humid and partly empty as porteños head to the coast, with many theatres and restaurants on reduced hours in January. Autumn from March to May and spring from September to November are the best seasons, with mild days, the jacarandas purple in November and the Book Fair, Tango Festival and polo filling the calendar. Winter from June to August is cool rather than cold, grey at times, and the cheapest season.
The city's cafés, bookshops and milongas are at their most local in winter. Dinner starts after nine and the milongas after midnight; the Teatro Colón sells tickets online weeks ahead for its April-to-December season. Inflation moves prices constantly, so quote in dollars and check the exchange rate the week you travel. Public holidays are frequent and some move to Mondays to make long weekends. For the best balance of weather and events, take April or October.
