08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

January is high summer, hot and humid with afternoons above 30 °C and sudden storms on about nine days, and many porteños away at Mar del Plata, so some theatres, restaurants and shops close or shorten hours. The city feels relaxed and parking is easy. Hotel rates are moderate, and the parks and the Costanera are the escape from the heat. The Teatro Colón is closed for its summer break.

The Buenos Aires Trans and the summer tango shows run in the tourist venues. The Tigre delta, an hour by train, is the local weekend escape with its river boats. Daylight runs from about six in the morning to eight at night. For the hot, sticky month with Carnival parades, see February.
