08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

June is the first winter month, mild and dry with afternoons around 18 °C, Vivid running until mid-month, the Film Festival in the second week and the King's Birthday long weekend on the second Monday. Days are short, with sunset before five, but sunny. Whale watching is excellent. It is good value apart from the Vivid weekends, when Circular Quay hotels fill. Rain falls on about ten days.

The Harbour is at its clearest in the dry winter air. The ski season opens in the Snowy Mountains on the long weekend, six hours away. The Biennale of Sydney runs in even years from March into June. Sea temperatures around 19 °C still draw year-round swimmers at Bondi. For the coolest month and the winter school holidays, see July.
