What the numbers don't tell you

February is the warmest sea month, around 24 °C, and still hot and humid, with afternoons around 27 °C, and the Mardi Gras season opening mid-month with a programme of events leading to the parade in early March. Schools return in the first week, so crowds ease a little. Late-summer storms are common, with rain on about twelve days. It is still peak pricing but with fewer families on the beaches.

The Lunar New Year festival fills Chinatown and Darling Harbour. The Sydney Festival ends in late January. Bluebottle warnings are frequent on north-easterly days. The coastal walks from Bondi to Coogee and Manly to Spit are best in the early morning. For the settled autumn weather and the Mardi Gras parade, see March.
