08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

June is tsuyu, the rainy season, with grey skies and humid drizzle on about half the days, though downpours are rarer than the name suggests and many days see only intermittent rain. Hydrangeas bloom at Hakusan Shrine and Meigetsu-in in Kamakura, and the Sanno Matsuri in mid-June in even years is one of Tokyo's three great festivals. It is a cheap and quiet month, and the only one with no national holiday.

Afternoons average 25 °C with humidity rising through the month. Hotel prices are at their lowest since February. Indoor Tokyo is the strategy: the museums of Ueno, the teamLab digital art spaces, the depachika food halls and the covered shopping streets of Nakano and Asakusa. The rains usually end in the third week of July; see July for the summer festival season.
