What the numbers don't tell you
February is cold and dry, with afternoons around 7 °C and nights well below freezing, and Spring Festival temple fairs at Ditan and Longtan parks and the Lantern Festival two weeks later if the new year falls this month. The holiday week itself sells out trains and tours; the weeks either side are quiet and cheap. The Great Wall under snow is magnificent and empty.
The ice season at the Summer Palace and Shichahai runs to late February. Air quality is variable in the heating season. Daylight passes eleven hours by month-end.
