08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

February is cold, often grey, with afternoons around 10 °C, and shaped by Spring Festival if it falls this month, with lantern displays at Yu Garden, firecrackers on the eve and the Lantern Festival two weeks later. The holiday week sells out transport and fills hotels; the fortnight after is empty and cheap. Plum blossom appears late in the month in the parks. Rain falls on about ten days.

Disneyland is packed in the holiday week and quiet after. The Longhua Temple's New Year bell is the city's traditional midnight. The Shanghai Museum and the Power Station of Art are the quiet afternoons. Daylight passes eleven hours by month-end. For the cool, wet transition and the first mild afternoons, see March.
