What the numbers don't tell you
February is the driest and coolest month, with afternoons around 28 °C, near-perfect beach weather and the Carnival parades downtown and on Isla Mujeres before Lent. Presidents' Day week brings a spike in US visitors. It is the best month for the beach with the fewest weather risks, priced accordingly. Rain falls on about three days. The sea is around 26 °C.
The Isla Mujeres Carnival is the more traditional one. The whale sharks are absent; the sailfish and the reef diving at Cozumel are at their best in the clear winter water.
