February is the coldest month, with afternoons around 8 °C and occasional snow and ice on the river, and Farsang carnival balls in the hotels and palaces, with the Busó masks in Mohács down the river on the weekend before Lent. Crowds are minimal and hotel rates low. Daylight grows noticeably, past five by month-end, and the cafés of the Belváros, the New York Café and Gerbeaud, are the place to be.
