08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

February is Carnival, with afternoons around 9 °C and the two weeks before Lent bringing masks, costumes, balls and the year's densest crowds in the Piazza, with the Flight of the Angel from the Campanile on the first Sunday and hotels at their highest prices. Outside those two weeks, February is cold, quiet and good value. The last weekend of Carnival is the most crowded. Rain falls on about five days.

The Carnival balls at the palazzi sell out months ahead at hundreds of euros. The Rialto market and the Cannaregio bacari are the local Carnival. Acqua alta is still possible. Daylight passes ten and a half hours by month-end. For the calm after Carnival and the first mild days, see March.
