08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

February is as quiet as January in the hotel figures, with 1.2 million arrivals in 2019 against 1.6 million in June, and it is the last month before prices start climbing towards spring. It is also the coldest: the lowest reading of the past decade, –10.2 °C, fell in February, and nights drop to freezing on about eight mornings. Daylight already stretches to six in the evening by month-end, a gain of roughly an hour and a quarter over the month.

Two things fill the city briefly. The French winter school holidays rotate by zone, and Paris's own zone C breaks from 6 to 22 February 2027, followed by zones A and B into early March, so family museums like the Cité des Sciences get busy while the Louvre does not. At the end of the month the Salon International de l'Agriculture opens at Porte de Versailles, 27 February to 7 March 2027, bringing farmers and politicians to the city and selling out hotels near the exhibition centre; the womenswear fashion shows follow on 1 March. The winter sales end on 2 February. If you want the Christmas-market atmosphere without December prices, note that it is gone by now; come in December instead.
