08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

February is the coldest month, with afternoons around 13 °C and nights near 4 °C, though frosts are rare and lunchtime sun on a piazza can feel like spring. Carnival brings costumed children to Piazza Navona and the Villa Borghese on the weekends before Lent, and the Rome Marathon can fall in the last week of February or in March. Queues stay short and prices low, making it a good month for the museums and for trattorie that are full the rest of the year.

Rain falls on about eight days. The almond trees in the Roman Forum blossom in the second half, and the mimosa for Women's Day on 8 March appears in the markets by the end of the month. Daylight passes ten and a half hours by month-end. The Vatican Museums' Friday evening openings, when scheduled, are easiest to book now. The spring crowds arrive with Easter; if it falls in March, the final week is busy.
