08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

August is as busy as July, with the Dublin Horse Show at the RDS in the second week and the August bank holiday on the first Monday. The All-Ireland hurling and football semi-finals draw huge crowds to Croke Park. Afternoons average 19 °C with rain on about fourteen days. Many locals holiday abroad, so neighbourhood restaurants are easier, while the centre stays full. Hotel rates stay at peak until the schools return at the end of the month.

The Dublin Fringe opens in September; August brings the Big Grill festival in Herbert Park and outdoor cinema in the city squares. Daylight shrinks from sixteen hours to fourteen across the month. The Book of Kells and the Storehouse still need a week's notice. For the driest and most settled month, see September.
