08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

August is busy, with the Pride canal parade on the first Saturday drawing hundreds of thousands to the Prinsengracht, the Grachtenfestival bringing classical concerts to boats and canal-side stages in mid-August, and the Uitmarkt opening the cultural season on the last weekend with free performances. Many locals are away, so neighbourhood restaurants in De Pijp and Oost are easier to get into than the museums.

Afternoons average 22 °C, with warm spells into the high twenties and rain on about nine days. Hotel prices stay at the summer peak until the Dutch schools return in late August or early September. Canal boats and the Heineken Experience run at capacity; the Rijksmuseum's early-morning slots are the calm option. The last week of August, after Pride and before the Uitmarkt, is slightly quieter. For warm days with fewer people, September is the month residents recommend.
