08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

August is the busiest month for international visitors, and the Notting Hill Carnival over the bank-holiday weekend at the end of the month draws around a million people to west London for two days of sound systems and parades. Many Londoners are away, so neighbourhood restaurants are easier to book while the big sights are not. Weather is warm but rarely stifling, with afternoons around 23 °C.

The Proms continue nightly at the Royal Albert Hall with cheap standing tickets on the day, and the Palace State Rooms remain open. The last Monday of August is a bank holiday, so museums are open but banks and some shops close. School holidays run all month, which keeps family attractions full until the first week of September. Hotel rates stay at their summer peak until the holidays end, then drop within days.
