What the numbers don't tell you
January is still in the northeast monsoon, with grey afternoons and the year's longest rain spells early in the month, when a monsoon surge can bring two or three days of continuous rain and cooler air around 25 °C. Chinese New Year often falls in late January, when Chinatown's street light-up and the River Hongbao fair at Marina Bay are spectacular, but many family-run shops and hawker stalls close for several days and hotels price up.
Outside the festival week, January is reasonable value. The Singapore Art Week in the second half fills galleries and the National Gallery with special programmes. Afternoon temperatures stay around 30 °C despite the rain. Book early if your dates overlap with the New Year; otherwise the first week, after the Christmas crowds leave and before the festival, is the quietest window of the season.
