What the numbers don't tell you

August is the hottest and most humid month, regularly above 33 °C, with Obon in the middle of the month when many Tokyoites return to their hometowns and the city itself feels slightly emptier while trains out of the capital are full. Summer festivals and fireworks fill the evenings, with the Koenji Awa Odori dance festival on the last weekend and the Asakusa Samba Carnival drawing big crowds. Mountain Day on 11 August is a public holiday.

Start early and plan indoor afternoons. The Comiket fan convention at Tokyo Big Sight in mid-August brings hundreds of thousands to the Odaiba area. Hotel prices are moderate outside the Obon week. Typhoons can reach Tokyo from August onward, though September is the peak month. Evenings cool only slightly, to around 25 °C. September brings relief by the end of the month; see September.
