What the numbers don't tell you

November is dry, mild and the most beautiful late-autumn month, with the ginkgo avenue at Meiji Jingu Gaien turning gold in the second half and the maples at Rikugien and Koishikawa Korakuen lit up at night from late November into early December. It is as busy and expensive as cherry-blossom season. Culture Day on 3 November and Labour Thanksgiving Day on 23 November are public holidays. The Tori-no-Ichi fairs at Otori shrines sell decorated rakes for good fortune on the days of the rooster.

Afternoons average 17 °C with cool evenings around 9 °C, and rain falls on only about seven days, the driest month of the autumn. Shichi-go-san on 15 November brings children in kimono to the shrines. Book hotels for the last two weeks by early autumn. Illuminations switch on across Marunouchi, Roppongi and Shibuya from mid-November and run through December.
