08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

October turns cool and wetter, with afternoons around 15 °C and rain on about eleven days, but the autumn colour along the canals and in the Vondelpark peaks in the second half. The Amsterdam Dance Event in the third week fills the clubs and the hotels with electronic-music fans from across Europe for five days, and the Marathon closes streets on a Sunday in mid-October. Dutch autumn school holidays fall in the second half, rotating by region.

The clocks go back on the last Sunday, bringing dusk before six. Hotel prices drop outside the Dance Event week, making late October good value. Museum Night, with late openings across fifty museums, falls in early November, so plan a long weekend around the turn of the month. Cycling is still pleasant with a windproof layer; the canal-boat season continues with heated boats. November is darker and quieter still; see November.
