08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

September is the month residents recommend: still warm, with afternoons around 19 °C, usually dry, and calmer once the schools return. Open Monument Day on the second weekend opens buildings normally closed, from churches to warehouses along the canals, free of charge. Hotel prices ease from their summer peak while evenings remain long enough for canal-side dinners until mid-month.

Daylight falls from thirteen and a half hours to just under twelve, with sunset moving from after eight to around half past seven. The Jordaan Festival in the second half brings Dutch folk music to the neighbourhood's cafés. Rain increases slightly in the last week. The museums are busy at weekends but easy on weekdays, and canal boats no longer need booking. For the same prices with autumn colour on the canals, October follows.
