08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

June brings the longest days, with light past ten in the evening, and the Holland Festival's performing-arts programme in the city's theatres. Temperatures are comfortable rather than hot, with afternoons around 23 °C, and the canal cruise season is in full swing. It is usually the driest early-summer month, though showers still arrive on about nine days.

The city's beaches at Zandvoort and Bloemendaal, half an hour by train, fill on warm weekends. The Amsterdam Roots Festival and Open Garden Days, when private canal-house gardens open to the public in mid-June, are the quieter cultural highlights. Hotel prices approach the summer peak in the second half as European schools begin to break up. Museum queues are long between eleven and three; the Rijksmuseum opens at nine and is calm for the first hour. July adds the Pride crowds; see July.
