When to go, in short
Copenhagen is a summer city with a very good winter act. From late May to August the harbour baths open, the sun sets after nine, and the streets fill with cyclists and outdoor tables; this is also when hotels are most expensive and the cruise ships arrive. Winter is dark, with the sun gone by half past three in December, but Tivoli's Christmas season, candlelit cafés and empty museums make it a cosy short break. September and early October give long, mild days at lower prices.
The weather is changeable in every month, so bring a rain layer whenever you come. Tivoli has four seasons: summer from around Easter to September, Halloween in October, Christmas from mid-November to early January, and a short winter opening in February. Most museums close on Mondays. Danish holidays, including the 24th of December and the day after Easter, close shops across the city. For long days at sensible prices, take late May or the first half of September.
