What the numbers don't tell you

March is unpredictable: a mild week can be followed by sleet. Daffodils line the royal parks from early in the month, and the clocks go forward on the last Sunday, which turns dark five o'clock afternoons into light evenings overnight. St Patrick's weekend fills Trafalgar Square and the pubs. Attractions remain pleasantly uncrowded until Easter, which can fall in late March.

The Boat Race on the Thames between Putney and Mortlake draws a quarter of a million spectators to the riverbanks on a Saturday or Sunday in late March or early April. Hotel prices begin their spring climb in the last week. For garden lovers, Kew's magnolias and the first cherry blossom arrive in late March in a mild year, two to three weeks ahead of the big displays in April.
