08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

July is peak season: Wimbledon finals in the first fortnight, the Proms beginning at the Royal Albert Hall in mid-July, and school holidays starting in the third week. Heatwaves above 30 °C occur most years now, and the deep Tube lines have no air conditioning, so plan outdoor days for the mornings and museums for the afternoons. Book major attractions and West End shows ahead, especially for weekends.

The Buckingham Palace State Rooms open to visitors from mid-July until the end of September, the one window to see inside. Hampstead Heath's swimming ponds and the lidos at Brockwell and London Fields are the local answer to heat. Hotel rates are at their highest of the year alongside August. Rain falls on about nine days, usually as evening showers. Daylight is still past fifteen hours at the start of the month and the sunset moves from after nine to around half past eight by the end.
