08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

June has the longest days of the year, with light until almost ten, and warm evenings that turn the South Bank into one long terrace. Trooping the Colour on a Saturday in mid-June brings the royal procession and an RAF flypast over the Mall, and Wimbledon starts in the last week with its famous queue for ground passes. Rain is light and short-lived, and crowds build from mid-month as European schools begin to break up.

Hotel prices step up to summer levels, and the big-ticket sights, the Tower, the Eye and Buckingham Palace tours when the State Rooms open in summer, need booking a week or more ahead. Outdoor cinema and concerts start in the royal parks. Temperatures average 21 °C in the afternoon and rarely exceed 28 °C, so London is a comfortable summer city compared with the continent. For the same light with fewer visitors, May is the alternative.
