What the numbers don't tell you

January is cold, damp and frequently foggy, with afternoons around 7 °C, the Epiphany regatta of costumed Befanas on the Grand Canal on 6 January and the possibility of acqua alta, when raised walkways appear in Piazza San Marco. It is the quietest month of the year and the cheapest, and the city under mist is extraordinary. Many restaurants close for annual holidays after Epiphany. Rain falls on about six days.

The Fenice opera house runs its winter season. The Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim are empty on weekday mornings. The Carnival preparations begin in late January in some years. Daylight runs from about half past seven to five. For Carnival and the densest crowds of the year, see February.
