08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

September is the month Parisians return and the one most regulars recommend. Hotel arrivals climb back to 1.5 million, six percent above the yearly average, as French schools resume on 1 September 2026 and the business calendar restarts. Afternoons still average 22 °C, with one day in ten above 27 °C and the first cool mornings by the end; rain falls on about ten days, the same as July. Daylight shrinks by an hour and a half across the month, from sunset near half past eight to half past seven.

Two weekends matter. The Journées du Patrimoine, always the third weekend, 19 and 20 September in 2026, open the Élysée, the Senate, ministries and private hôtels particuliers for free, with queues of several hours for the best-known buildings and no queue at all for dozens of others. The womenswear fashion week runs from 27 September to 5 October 2027, filling the hotels of the 8th and 1st arrondissements and the restaurants around them. The Versailles fountain shows and the Giverny gardens remain open until 1 November, with the gardens at their most colourful in late September. Hotel rates sit between the June peak and the winter low; book early for the heritage weekend and the fashion week, which overlaps with the first days of October.
