08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

November has two public holidays, All Saints' on 1 November and Armistice Day on 11 November, and the end of the Toussaint school holidays on 2 November 2026; after that the city settles into its quietest stretch until Christmas. Hotel arrivals stay two percent above the yearly average, but the mix changes: November 2019 had the highest number of French domestic arrivals of any month, 707,000, and far fewer international visitors than summer, so the Louvre's Tuesday closure and Orsay's Monday closure are the only queues you need to plan around.

It is the wettest month by rain days, about thirteen, and the dullest, with 140 hours of sunshine and the sun setting around five. Frost returns on two or three mornings. The compensation arrives on 22 November 2026, when the Christmas market in the Jardins des Champs-Élysées opens and the avenue's lights come on, followed by the department-store windows on Boulevard Haussmann. The Salon du Chocolat closes on 1 November, Giverny and the Versailles fountains the same day, and the Catacombs are open but closed on Mondays. November rates are the lowest of the autumn, and a raincoat beats an umbrella on the windier days along the river. The markets and lights continue into December, when prices climb again.
