08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

July is hot by Paris standards, with afternoons averaging 25 °C and about four days above 30 °C; the ten-year ERA5 maximum of 40.7 °C also falls in July. Bastille Day on 14 July brings the military parade down the Champs-Élysées in the morning and fireworks at the Eiffel Tower around eleven at night, with the Champ de Mars closed off from the afternoon. In 2027 it falls on a Wednesday. The Tour de France finishes on the last Sunday of the month, 26 July in 2026, when the riders climbed Montmartre before the Champs-Élysées sprint and the whole north of the city was fenced off for the day.

Paris Plages turns the Rives de Seine and the Bassin de la Villette into beaches, 4 July to 30 August in 2026, with free swimming in the canal basin. French schools break up on 3 July 2027 and the German states start their summer holidays from 28 June, so hotel arrivals run ten percent above the yearly average, with the Louvre, Orsay and the Eiffel Tower at their longest queues of the year; book timed entries the day they are released. Evenings are long and warm, and rain is rare, about ten days. The city empties noticeably in August, when prices dip for a few weeks.
