What the numbers don't tell you

July is warm, occasionally hot, with afternoons around 24 °C and heat waves above 32 °C in some years, and the busiest month in the old town, with the Charles Bridge packed from mid-morning. The public holidays on 5 and 6 July close shops for two days. The river beaches and the outdoor cinemas are the local escape. Visit the Castle at opening time or after six to avoid the crush.

Rain falls on about nine days, usually as thunderstorms. The Bohemia Jazz Fest brings free concerts to Old Town Square in mid-July. Hotel rates are at their peak. The Vltava boat trips and the paddle boats at Slovanský island are busy all day. Many Prague residents leave for cottages at weekends, so Vinohrady and Karlín restaurants are easier. August continues the peak with the Letní Letná circus festival; see August.
