What the numbers don't tell you

April is the most beautiful and the most crowded month: Holy Week brings pilgrims to St Peter's, the city celebrates its founding on 21 April with historical parades, and Liberation Day on 25 April makes a long weekend. Afternoons average 19 °C with the year's best light on the travertine. Rain falls on about eight days, briefly. Book everything, including restaurants, well ahead.

Easter Monday, Pasquetta, is a public holiday when Romans picnic in the parks and many shops close. The Vatican Museums close on Easter Sunday and Monday; the Colosseum stays open. The wisteria at the Orto Botanico and on the Aventine peaks in mid-April, and the Spanish Steps are decorated with azaleas from late April into May. Hotel prices are at their spring peak through the Liberation Day weekend, then ease slightly before the May holidays. The first half of May follows with similar weather and fewer pilgrims.
