08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

July is hot, routinely above 32 °C, with the stone of the city radiating heat until late evening and nights that stay above 20 °C. Fountains, early mornings and the air-conditioned Vatican Museums are the strategy; the Forum and Palatine have little shade and are best at opening time. Outdoor opera at Caracalla, film screenings on Tiber Island and the Estate Romana concerts fill the evenings. Crowds remain at summer peak.

Rain is rare, about four days, and the nasoni drinking fountains on every corner matter more than any guidebook tip. The Vatican Museums close on Sundays except the last of the month. Hotel prices are high but slightly below Easter and October. Daylight lasts until nearly nine. Heatwaves above 38 °C occur in some years, when the city issues alerts and museums extend hours. August brings Ferragosto and the Roman exodus; see August.
