08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

March is unpredictable, with warm afternoons around 16 °C and sudden showers, and the first wisteria and tour groups appearing by the end of the month. The Marathon closes central streets for a Sunday morning, with the course passing the Colosseum and St Peter's. If Easter falls in March, Holy Week brings pilgrims to the Vatican and the Pope's Via Crucis at the Colosseum on Good Friday.

The clocks go forward on the last Sunday, giving long evenings on the Gianicolo. Rain falls on about nine days. Hotel prices stay at winter levels until the week before Easter, then jump. Women's Day on 8 March fills the city with mimosa. The Vatican Museums and Colosseum are still easy to book two weeks ahead; from Easter onward allow a month. The season proper, with its crowds and prices, begins in April.
