What the numbers don't tell you

August is the hottest month, with afternoons around 32 °C, and Ferragosto on 15 August empties the city of Romans; many neighbourhood restaurants and shops close for two weeks around the holiday, while the major sights stay open and crowded with international visitors. The Assumption is a public holiday, with the Pantheon's rose-petal ceremony at Pentecost long past but the Gran Ballo di Ferragosto filling the piazzas with free dancing.

Hotel rates dip in the second half once the European holiday peak passes. Rain falls on about four days, usually as a late-afternoon storm that briefly cools the evening. The Vatican Museums and Colosseum run their longest queues of the year between ten and two; book the first slot of the day. Trastevere and Testaccio are the quarters most affected by closures; the centre around the Pantheon less so. The city comes back to life in the first week of September.
