08Editor's notes

What the numbers don't tell you

September is the month locals recommend: still warm, with afternoons around 28 °C in the first half and 25 °C by the end, lower humidity, long evenings and the first cooler nights. Schools return mid-month and cruise groups peak, so the Vatican queues remain long. The Taste of Roma food festival and the first opera of the Teatro dell'Opera's season fall in September. Rain returns in the second half, about six days.

Hotel prices stay at summer levels until the end of the month. Early September can still bring 30 °C afternoons, so keep the early-morning routine for the Forum. The Estate Romana programme ends, and the open-air cinemas close. For the same weather with fewer tour groups, the second half of the month is better than the first. October brings the autumn light and the busiest autumn weeks; see October.
