What the numbers don't tell you

November is the wettest month, with rain on about eleven days and real downpours, but also the emptiest at the big sights and the cheapest for hotels. All Saints' Day on 1 November is a holiday, with Romans visiting the Verano cemetery. Afternoons average 17 °C, so between showers the city is still mild, and the museums are a pleasure without crowds. The Roma Jazz Festival fills the Auditorium through the month.

Daylight drops to under ten hours, with sunset before five by month-end. The Vatican Museums are at their quietest of the year on weekday afternoons. The new-season olive oil and the first truffles arrive in the markets of Campo de' Fiori and Testaccio. Christmas lights switch on along Via del Corso and at Piazza Venezia in the first week of December; the nativity season begins on 8 December. For the festive version of the quiet city, see December.
