The most visited places on earth are not all famous. A Malaysian state most travellers couldn’t place on a map — Johor, anchored by Johor Bahru — recorded 22 million foreign visitors in 2024, effectively the same as the Paris region or London. Turkey’s Muğla province quietly hosts ~3 million foreign visitors a year, Chinese border city Zhuhai counts over 2 million inbound overnight guests, and Indonesia’s Batam absorbs more than a million — mostly Singaporeans on a 50-minute ferry. These flows barely appear in travel media, because they are driven by land borders, ferries and package resorts rather than bucket lists.

Why these places are invisible
- Borders, not bucket lists. Johor’s 22 million includes 17.5 million Singaporean entries across the Causeway — commuters, shoppers, weekenders. It is mass international travel, just not the kind that gets magazine covers.
- Resort provinces fly under the city radar. Muğla is where Britain actually goes on holiday in Turkey (over a third of its visitors are British), yet coverage goes to Istanbul and Antalya.
- Gateway cities inherit their neighbours’ crowds. Zhuhai’s inbound market is 84% Hong Kong and Macao; Batam lives off Singapore’s ferry terminals.
- Statistics see them, media don’t. All four publish official numbers — they simply lack the storytelling infrastructure of a Paris or London.
Methodology
Figures are the latest official statistics per destination; metrics differ by row and are labeled (state, province, city-overnight, Jan–Nov). They are shown side by side to compare scale of foreign inflow, not as a like-for-like ranking — Johor’s state figure counts border entries, London’s counts overnight-capable visits.
