How long does it take to get from the airport into the city — and what does it cost? We compared the primary public-transport option for each of ten major destinations, using current operator fares (checked September 2026). The spread is remarkable: Chennai’s metro does the job for about 60 cents, while London’s Elizabeth Line — after its March 2026 fare rise — costs roughly thirty times as much.

What stands out
- Asia wins the value quadrant. Bangkok (26 min, ~$1.30), Dubai (25 min, ~$2) and Chennai (35 min, ~$0.60) combine short rides with near-symbolic fares.
- London is the outlier on price: since March 2026 the Elizabeth Line costs £14.60 to Paddington (~$19) — and the Heathrow Express walk-up fare is £26, more than a Tokyo Narita Express ticket for a quarter of the distance.
- Paris raised the airport fare too: the single Paris Region Airports ticket is now €14, though it covers onward metro and RER connections for two hours.
- Tokyo depends on your airport: Haneda’s monorail gets you downtown for ~$5 in half an hour; Narita’s express costs ~$21 and takes nearly an hour.
Methodology
We list the fastest commonly used public-transport option per main airport (for Da Nang, where the airport is 3 km from the centre, a taxi is the standard choice; for Mecca, the Haramain high-speed rail from Jeddah’s airport). Fares are current operator prices as of September 2026, converted to US dollars at approximate market rates; local fares are authoritative, conversions indicative.
